    card_not_supported: ask for a new card.

    Ask the customer for a different card, and say plainly that their bank doesn’t allow this type of payment on that card.

    What does card_not_supported mean in Stripe?

    It means this card can’t be used for this kind of purchase: often recurring, international or online charges.

    What happens next

    The same decline, handled two ways: a fixed retry ladder, and Stripe Smart Retries with North Metric following up once they end. North Metric never retries a card; its part in failed payment recovery starts when Stripe stops.

    North Metric drafts a card-update note with its own link, at once if Stripe can’t retry the card, or when its retries end. You approve it first.

    What it means

    Some prepaid, gift and corporate cards block subscriptions entirely, so retrying the same card can never succeed. Stripe returns it as a decline_code inside a card_error, so your integration sees the charge fail and the reason sits in this field.

    {
      "error": {
        "type": "card_error",
        "code": "card_declined",
        "decline_code": "card_not_supported",
        "message": "Your card was declined."
      }
    }

    Why it happens

    •The issuer doesn’t allow this card to be used for recurring charges.•The card blocks online or cross-border purchases.•It’s a prepaid, gift or corporate card with limits on what it can buy.

    Neither, exactly: a retry alone won’t work, but the customer can fix it (update card).
